Floral Retirement Card

Happy Monday!

Nothing exciting happened to me today.  Just the usual...work.  We haven't been real busy lately, so sometimes it hard to come up with ideas of what to do.  You can only do busy work for so long before that gets old.

Last Thursday, one of my co-workers announces that today is her last day.  She's done.  As in retirement.  Lucky her!  We all knew it was coming, but didn't exactly know when.  She decided that morning.  We weren't able to have a retirement party, but I couldn't resist making a card for every one to sign.  She loves flowers so this is what I came up with.

Unfortunately, the DSP was Birthday Bouquet and is retired.  It was too pretty for me sell it.  The flowers on the DSP and from the Incredible Like You stamp set are very similar.  I was pleased with the way they all looked together.

The ribbon was also retired.  It was from the Sycamore Street pack that had ribbon and buttons.  It was just perfect for this card.  You could easily substitute another ribbon of these colors instead.

After looking through mystash of stamps, I realized not a single stamp said retirement.  Seriously.  How does that happen?  Onto Plan B.  I found a stamp that would work from Thoughtful Banners stamp set.  It fits for her situation, but not ours.

She will be missed.

Daisy and the Embossing Paste

Is anyone watching the Oscars?  All I'm interested in is the Best Actor/Actress and Film.  I did like the beginning when Queen performed.  In a fluke, I turned it back on just in time to see Bradley Cooper and Lady Gaga sing Shallow.  That was terriffic.  The best part is going to watch the score rating of the red carpet dresses.

I've had this embossing paste for at least 6 months now and have never used it.  For some reason, it seemed intimidating to me.  Crazy right?  Now, I will be the first to say...what was I thinking???  It was really fun and easy to play with. Even addicting.   My club people loved making this card.

The craziest thing I used to make this card was a Stamparatus magnetic sheet and its magnets.  I lined the mask with my Crumb Cake and used the magnets to keep the mask from moving.  If you don't have the Stamparatus, use the Big Shot magnetic platform and magnets.  I liked this because after I added the embossing paste, I could easily life up an edge to see if any part needed to be touched up.  It worked really good.

I love this brick mask.  But, I can't wait to play with the medallian next.  There are two methods I want to play with.  One is coloring the paste with the re-inkers.  Another is using embossing paste.  Both sound very intriguing and I think the medallian will look super cool using either method.  I'll make sure to share the results.

Tasty Thursday - Peas and Pancetta

Is there any way to make peas taste better? Just like bacon, pancetta makes everything taste better.

Pancetta is like an Italian bacon made from the pork belly meat, and is salt cured.  Sometimes it is sliced very thin, or more likely, found diced in small cubes.  You can find it in the deli of your grocery store, usually around the area where the gourmet cheese is.

I found this recipe in a Penzey's Spice magazine several years ago.  If you are near a Penzey's Spices store, GO!  The spices are amazing.  They have jars of every single spice so you get to smell each one.  I also try to avoid cooking with salt as much as I can.  Penzey's has a whole sheet of their own spice blends  that are salt free!  They are amazing!  If you get a chance, I encourage you to stop in and check out the store.

Ok, back on track.

This is a recipe I don't make too often, more when we are having a special dinner.  Take a look.

Peas and Pancetta

1 pound frozen peas

1/2 lb finely diced pancetta

3 shellots, peeled and thinly sliced

2 Tablespoon olive oil

1/8 - 1/4 teaspoon crushed red pepper flakes

1/4 teaspoon thyme (optional)

Heat olive oil in a large frying pan over medium heat.  Add the pancetta and cook, stirring frequently until golden brown and the fat has rendered off, 15-20 minutes.  Remove pancetta to drain on a paper-towel lined plate.  If there is a more than about 1/4 cup of oil left in the pan, drain some off and discard.

Add the shallots, crushed red peppers and thyme to the pan and cook until softened, stirring regularly, about 10 minutes.  Add the peas and cook until just warmed through, 5-10 minutes.  Stir gently every few minutes.  Transfer to a serving bowl.  Add the pancetta and stir to combine.

-----------------------------------

This is definately not a hard recipe to make, but it's worth it.  The best thing is that the pancetta comes already diced and ready to use.  No prepping necessary.  I can see substituting bacon if you can't find pancetta.  But, then you have to go through the process of slicing and cooking the bacon.  Pancetta is sooo much easier.

Moments in Lovely Lipstick

I should know better than to do a blog post on a Wednesday night.  It's Chicago night on NBC.  Do you watch them?  Chicago Med, Chicago Fire and Chicago PD.  Chicago Fire is by far the absolute best.  And tonight they are doing a cross over between Fire and PD.  So, in otherwords, it's taking me twice as long to do this post.  If I would have thought this through, I should have done this earlier in the day.  Oh well.  Next time.

I love these calla lilies.  One year I even planted some in this exact shade, but they never grew back the next year.  I was so disappointed.  Now, I can get them year round with this stamp set!

For some reason, when I think of these calla lillies, I always think in a deep shade of pink.  Lovely Lipstick comes to mind.  Love how they pop against the black.  They definately make a statement.

I had to fussy cut the large lily and also the leaf.  Good news is that starting in March, the framelits will be available for purchasing!  No more fussy cutting.  A little too late for this card, but it wasn't hard to cut out.

It's hard to see, but I had another layer of Basic Black on the card base.  This layer I used with the Layered leaves Dynamic Embossing Folder.  It added a little bit of texture because I thought the base was just a little too plain.

Look at the inside of the card.  Love how this turned out.  Stamp the lillies for the front of the card and then immediately on the inside piece.  If you don't stamp off, the image will be too dark to actually write over.

This card was a little putzy to put together, but in the end, it was worth it.  It's almost to pretty for a sympathy card.

These kits are great. All you need is the stamp set and adhesive.  They even incude  the glue dots and dimensionals.  Sweet!  Look and see for yourself what is all incuded.

Kit includes:

* Laser-cut card front overlays
* 16 printed envelopes
* Glimmer, printed, and silver foil die-cut accents

* 6-5/16" x 5" x 2-5/16" (16 x 12.7 x 5.9 cm) printed polypropylene storage envelope

Look at all the other cards you get to make with this kit.

Now do you see why I had a tough decision a to which card to make?  They are all beautiful and people would never know that these cards come from a kit.  Stampin' Up! made a video explaining this kit.  It is just over 4 short minutes long.   You can view it here:  Incredible Like You Project Kit by Stampin’ Up!

Friendship Card

It's another snowy Sunday in Wisconsin.  It has barely stopped all day.  We are all done with Winter and waiting for Spring to come.  Hopefully soon.

I made this card for a make 'n take for my demo meeting.  Can you tell I am thinking Spring with the colors I used?

Went with my trusty set, Incredible Like You.  Lately, it has been my go-to set.  Have you noticed?  I used both stamps of the stems for the first time.  On some, I did stamp off for the lighter shande of Lemon Lime Twist.  With the others, I used the blossoms and stamped those on the ends.

The flower was just Daffodil Delight.  By stamping over some parts, it gives the look of being two different colors.  Of course, I had to fussy cut this one out.

I used the Lemon Lime Twist Organcy ribbon.  It is currently on backorder.  Hopefully on March 4, more will be coming in to the warehouse.   On another card, I used Daffodil Delight Organdy ribbon and that looked good too.  My preference was the Lemon Lime Twist though.
